Case Name: Esther Mamallacta Shiguago et al. v. Occidental Petroleum Co., Occidental Exploration and Production Co.
Plaintiffs: The plaintiffs are victims of murder and torture at the hands of Occidental’s paramilitary squads.
Summary: In 2006, a new case was filed against Occidental for using military and paramilitary death squads to guard its pipeline in Ecuador, which resulted in the expected violence against the local population. The victims of murder and torture brought suit seeking damages and injunctive relief. The case is currently under a stay while the trial judge awaits a ruling on some common issues in a different case that is on appeal in the 9th Circuit, Sarei v. Rio Tinto.
